Senseless suffering surrounds us. When agony confronts us – our & others – how can it produce anything but rage against God? What wisdom can be gained from it?
Job experiences suffering in a way we all hope never strikes us. Despite being a good & blameless man – his health, wealth, family, reputation & joy are all ripped from him in one moment. His experience shows us that some suffering is order being hidden. God has a reason behind it – that Job never learns. What Job doesn’t learn in a powerful way is that there is only one God – & it isn’t Job.
Job encourages us to see that in the face of agony, the wise life recognises that suffering is the hiddenness of order & actually helps us accept the reality that we aren’t God.
